Roots and Shoots Year 1

Despite the weather forecast, the day turned out to be dry and warm. The Year 1 children from Bredon Hancock’s Endowed First School came well prepared for all weather. Today’s topic was Roots and Shoots, with lots of spring growth this was a great topic to do out on the farm.

Our first activity was to look at the spring born calves. We then had a walk through some very lush grass fields, ready for the cows to munch their way through. The orchard proved to have an interesting water feature; a dead pheasant and a dead crow in the water trough which the children were fascinated by. The fruit trees in the orchard had some beautiful blossom on. As we walked around the farm the children, collected items from nature and once in the ‘den building’ wood, the children made their own plants which included roots, stem and flower.

Whilst in the wood we saw a sprayer spraying the wheat crop. Once the sprayer had left the field we had a look at the wheat and identified the root, stem and leaves. Earlier in the day we had read ‘the little red hen’ and thought about wheat production. Our walk back for lunch took us through the stubble turnip field and the children thought about the large leaves capturing the suns energy to grow. The afternoon was lovely and warm and the children really enjoyed all that the playwood has to offer.
