Habitats Year 2

Year Two from Dean Close School came to the farm to think about habitats on the farm. To start the day we thought about which animals live at Sandfield Farm, both wild and farm animals. The children thought of lots of creatures from tiny ants to the big bulls.

We started our farm walk looking at some of this springs calves and then moved on to the three very large Angus Bulls. The children were able to get very close to one of the bulls, as he lent his head over the wire, so I could scratch the top of his head. Big softie!

We went into the buffer zone for an adventure making our own path through the trees and bushes. The children quickened their pace when I explained it was an ideal habitat for snakes.

As the children walked on the farm they collected items from nature such as flowers, leaves, feathers and seeds. Once we were at the pond the children built nests for a rubber duck. We sat by the pond and looked at all the different habitats we could see from that point on the farm. We then went pond dipping to discover which creatures live in a pond habitat.

After lunch many of the children chose to go bug hunting in the play wood, armed with a magnifying glass and a bug pot, the children upturned old bits of wood and found mini beasts.
