Chocolate Year 5

Year 5 from Sedgeberrow C of E First School visited Sandfield Farm today. We had such a mix of subjects covered today. The topic of the term for this class is ‘Chocolate’. Firstly we discussed whether it is Winter or Spring…..? After our health and safety talk the children were shown a sample of milk fresh from our cows this morning. We then discussed the different types of milk found in their fridges at home. I explained about the processes of pasteurisation and homogenisation. Later on the children tried the standard three types of milk; full, semi-skimmed and skimmed. As can be seen by the photo below all the milk was drunk. The children were surprised that the ‘fatty’ milk has less than 4% fat. We then discussed milk being turned into milk powder for chocolate making and the milk fat content required for chocolate. The children had chance to smell the milk powder we feed our calves with, a smell non of them liked. After the milk discussions we played a game of guess the chocolate bar……for example ‘ROAR’ ….is a lion bar.

After snack we headed outside for a quick run around the muddy field and then on to see the week old calves. We saw their ear tags and self feeding milk bar. Naughty Fly Dog chased the one year old heifers in the next pen. We then moved on to the second heifer shed and looked at the recycled wood chip we are using for their bedding. A quick walk into the den building wood where the children decided to build their own chocolate factory with sticks and plenty of imagination. The photo below shows a chocolate mixing machine. The factory building was going well until two boys found a badger skull in the hedge, complete with one nostril and hairs in the eye socket. All thoughts of chocolate were abandoned as the children took turns to hold the semi-decomposed skull. The skull has been ‘kindly donated’ to the school for further investigation. Back onto chocolate after lunch, when we all tried cadbury’s ‘triple sensation’ bar, which has layers of dark, white and milk chocolate! After lunch the children spent a happy hour in the play wood, mainly in the mud.
